City saddened by Slave Route Challenge tragedy

The City of Cape Town would like to express its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the runner who tragically passed away at the Slave Route Challenge hosted earlier today.

City officials and emergency services were alerted to an incident along Government Avenue, where an oak tree unexpectedly fell, obstructing the route and seriously injuring a participant.

Emergency medical services responded swiftly. The runner was transported to hospital, where she sadly succumbed to her injuries.

This is a deeply tragic incident.

We are working closely with the event organisers and the South African Police Service to fully understand the circumstances surrounding the incident.
